Please visit the Windows CE section of the WorldNet User's Reference Desk (WURD)
web site at http://www.wurd.com/eng/setup/WindowsCE/index.htm. It contains
the latest information on Windows CE and AT&T WorldNet Service.
This Read Me file contains instructions and information about the AT&T
WorldNet Service Setup for both Windows CE 2.11 and 3.0 (PocketPC). The version of
WorldNet that will be installed on your Windows CE device will be the
proper one based on the version of Windows CE you are running.
Since this is a combined ReadMe file for versions 2.11 and 3.0 of Windows CE, some
words may not apply to your particular system. An example of this is as follows:
The term "Windows CE Services" is one used for the
Windows CE 2.11 operating system.
It is the desktop computer program used to synchronize, transfer and manage data
and files between your CE device and desktop computer.
The term "ActiveSync" has the same meaning, but this program was
released for the Windows CE 3.0 (PocketPC) operating system.
Be sure to read the section titled "Saving Your Information" below. According
to the terms and conditions you accepted when you agreed to download and/or
install this software from an AT&T CD-ROM, AT&T is not responsible for the
restoration of your data should it become lost or corrupted during the installation
of AT&T WorldNet Service Setup for Windows CE. It is your
responsibility to be sure that the information contained on your CE device is safe
in case of a failure or corruption of your device.
1. Terms and Conditions
Your downloading and/or installation of the AT&T WorldNet Service software
from an AT&T CD-ROM is subject to the AT&T WorldNet Service Terms
and Conditions. You agreed to these terms and conditions when you elected to
receive this software. If for any reason you have decided that you do not agree
to these terms and conditions, you must remove this software from your system.
2. New Features
The AT&T WorldNet CE 3.0 software supports new PocketPC devices, as well as the latest
AT&T WorldNet Service desktop client software, version 6.0.
For step by step instructions on how to properly use the Phonebook, please visit the
WURD web site at http://www.wurd.com/eng/setup/WindowsCE/index.htm.
3. System Requirements
Your "primary computer" can be your desktop system or your laptop; it is
the Windows 95/98/NT/2000/WMe computer on which you have installed AT&T WorldNet
software, and also with which you have established a "partnership" with your
CE device. For more information on installing Microsoft® Windows CE Services
or Microsoft ActiveSync and setting up a partnership, please consult
your CE device's manual.
NOTE: You MUST install and register for AT&T WorldNet Service on your
Microsoft Windows 95/98/NT/2000/WMe computer before running this software designed
for the Windows CE operating system. If you have not registered for WorldNet
Service using your primary computer, or if your primary computer is incapable
of connecting to AT&T WorldNet Service, this procedure will fail.
Your primary computer must meet the following minimum requirements:
- An IBM-compatible personal computer with a Pentium 100MHz processor or faster
(Pentium II class processor or faster recommended)
- Microsoft® Windows 95, 98, NT 4.0, 2000, or Me
- 32MB RAM
- 2.3 MB of free hard disk space needed for the download and setup;
1.5 MB of free hard disk space needed if installing from a CD-ROM
- AT&T WorldNet Service version 5.0 or
later (CSM 6.1 or higher recommended)
- Microsoft Windows CE Services, if your CE Device is running Windows CE 2.11
- Microsoft ActiveSync, if your CE Device is running Windows CE 3.0 (PocketPC)
If your CE device is running Windows CE 2.11 (or higher), then it must meet the
following minimum requirements:
- Microsoft Windows CE 2.11 (or higher)
- 190 KB free memory
- 14.4 Kbps modem (56k/V.90 is
recommended)
- CPU's:
Handheld PC/Handheld PC Pro -- MIPS, SH3, SH4 or ARM/StrongARM
Palm-size PC -- MIPS, SH3
Pocket PC -- MIPS, SH3, ARM
In addition, you will need a standard phone line, which must be unused
during the setup procedure.
The AT&T WorldNet Service Setup for Windows CE download file is
approximately 1.6 MB. You will temporarily need an additional 4.0 MB
of hard disk space on your primary hard drive (where Windows OS is installed)
during the setup process.
4. Saving Your Information
VERY IMPORTANT:
Using Microsoft Windows CE Services or ActiveSync, you can easily store
a safety copy (a "backup") of the information contained within your CE Device so
that it can be completely restored in case of the failure or corruption of your
device.
AT&T WorldNet Service strongly recommends that you use this feature to save
a copy of your data in case AT&T WorldNet Service Setup for Windows CE
should fail for any reason.
The restoration of your saved information is your only recourse if, for any
reason, a failure or corruption of your device should occur during the
execution of AT&T WorldNet Service Setup for Windows CE.
Please consult the manual for your CE device for specific instructions on
how to back up your data, and how to restore it if necessary.
5. Before You Run Setup
Please perform the following steps after the download is complete (no download
if you are installing from a CD-ROM), prior to installing AT&T WorldNet Service
Setup for Windows CE:
- Close all running Windows and/or MS-DOS applications on your
primary computer.
- Close all running applications on your CE device.
- Close all active Dial-Up Networking or communications connections
on your primary computer.
- Close all active Dial-Up Networking or communications connections
on your CE device.
- Be sure AT&T WorldNet Service has been installed and is working
properly on your primary computer. If not, install it now and verify
that it is working properly. After installation, be sure that it
has connected successfully; after verifying this, make sure you have
disconnected from AT&T WorldNet Service.
- Be sure that Microsoft Windows CE Services or ActiveSync,
is installed and working properly on your primary computer. If not, install
it now and verify that it is working properly.
- Back up your CE device. After you finish the backup, close Windows CE Services
or ActiveSync.
- Verify that your CE device is physically connected to the serial or USB port
used for communication between it and your primary computer.
- If you have a PCMCIA modem, make sure that it is recognized by your
CE device. Some devices warn that the use of a PCMCIA modem
may put too much of a strain on rechargeable batteries, and offer the
option of switching it off, even though it may be physically inserted.
In this case, be sure that your device's AC power adapter is plugged
in and working.
NOTE: Because Setup attempts to automatically configure your device,
there is a possibility that it will not prompt you if you don't verify that your
modem is installed and working properly.
6. Setup Step-By-Step Procedure
- On your primary Windows computer, use the Windows Explorer to locate
the file "wnetce3.exe". It will be in the directory you selected when you
downloaded it. If you are installing from a CD-ROM, the file "wnetce3.exe"
should
be located in the tools directory. If you have trouble finding it, click the Start
Button and select "Find", then "Files or Folders..." to search for it
on your
hard drive.
- Double-click the "wnetce3.exe" icon to start the installation. Your primary
computer will extract needed files from the distribution archive and set
up the InstallShield wizard, and present a welcome screen.
- Press "Next". Setup will load files onto your PC, and copy poplist.txt files
from
your PC to your CE device. At last, it will launch CeAppMgr.exe. Follow the steps CeAppMgr
promoted to install the application to your CE device.
- At the end of CeAppMgr, WnCESetup.exe will be launched on your Ce device. It will
replicate
your desktop AT&T WorldNet® Service settings to your CE device. The program will
configure the following:
- Dialing Properties; it will add a new location with the same name
and settings as your primary computer's default location. This can
be modified by pressing the Start button and selecting "Settings" in
the Start Menu, then double-clicking on the Communications Properties
icon and selecting the Dialing tab. Consult your Handheld PC's manual
for more information on how to modify or add locations.
- Your connection profile.
- Your account profile within your device's Inbox (Windows CE 2.11 only).
- Microsoft Pocket Internet Explorer.
- If more than one serial communications device is present on your device,
Setup will then prompt you to select a modem. Select the modem you plan to
use to connect your device to AT&T WorldNet Service.
NOTE: Some Handheld PCs present the serial connection to the primary
computer as one of the choices, often identified as "Hayes Compatible
Modem on COM1:". If your modem isn't plugged in or recognized, this may be
the only choice, in which case your device may automatically select the
COM1 entry without prompting you.
- You can now access AT&T WorldNet Service using your device. You need
to disconnect from your primary PC in order to use the modem.
- If you cancel on WnCESetup.exe. You can run it later from:
Pocket PC -- Start\AT&T WorldNet\WnSetup (Shortcut)
Palm-size PC -- Start\Programs\WnSetup (Shortcut)
HPC/HPCPro -- \Program Files\AT&T WorldNet Service\wnCESetup.exe (Application)
- Press "Finish" on your PC to complete the installation. You can also view the
Release Notes
(this file) at this time.
7. Manual Instructions
